UPDATE: 10-07-08 :: I just received a comment from Bill Staples, a Microsoft Employee, who informs me that IIS7 indeed does support a URL rewrite, especially for WordPress. Please see comments section below for URL. Thanks Bill for setting the record straight. Perhaps now would be a good time for me to put the scotch bottle down and train up on Server 2008/IIS…

The information in this article will allow you to run WordPress permalinks on Windows Server 2000, 2003, or 2008 using IIS5, IIS6, or IIS7.

Ok, first of all there is no real MOD_REWRITE setting for IIS5 or IIS6. That’s an Apache mod and though there are some ISAPI_MOD_REWRITE projects floating around out there, most of them do NOT do the exact same thing as MOD_REWRITE does and will not function in IIS as MOD_REWRITE does in APACHE.

For programs such as Wordpress that normally are designed for Apache installations, you can install the following ISAPI filter and all your Permalink problems go away.

First, what is a Permalink. A permalink is what Wordpress uses to form the URL of your posts/pages into something more SEO friendly or human readable. (HINT: Get to Permalinks by logging into your WordPress Admin Panel your http://www.domain.com/wp-admin/ Click on SETTINGS, Permalinks.)

By default, a wordpress standard URL on Apache is formed as such:
http://www.nickmattern.com/2008/10/06/sample-post/

,
In IIS, the WordPress URL uses the index.php file to display your permalinks, ex.
http://shelbygirl.com/index.php/2008/10/06/sample-post/

Obviously the IIS URL doesn’t help the user remember your URL What most users and search engines want to see is a descriptive URL. www.domain.com/index.php?a=4423 is a LOT harder to remember than www.domain.com/AboutUs would be.

Format your Permalinks in the following manner: /%postname%/, making sure to begin each string with a /% and end each string with a %/. If I wanted my URL to have the Year/Date/Postname, I’d format my Permalink string as such: /%year%/%monthnum%/%postname%/

Now back to why this matters for IIS. First, Apache forms URLs without the need for index.php to be involved with the URL. Be default, in IIS, your permalinks will use this format:
http://shelbygirl.com/index.php/2008/10/06/sample-post/ (Notice the index.php) whereas Apache will simply use

http://www.nickmattern.com/2008/10/06/sample-post/.
Now, according to numerous Google Blogs, the index.php shouldn’t really matter, and that’s mostly correct. The problem you’ll find is your users not being able to remember the index.php, they’ll simply see the domain.com/postname, not the domain.com/index.php/postname.

By installing the filter listed above (You’ll need to have access to the IIS manager and your PHP.ini file) you can eliminate the need for the index.php to be included in any URLs that Wordpress cranks out. Be sure to back up your PHP.ini file before you change it and while you’re at it, make a backup of your IIS Site as well.

Once the filter is installed, restart IIS and change your permalink structure accordingly, then test out your WordPress content. If it doesn’t work, go back and reread the instructions.

Hello,

As many of you already know, on August 12, 2008, we experienced a code issue with the updated versions of ESX 3.5 and ESXi 3.5 (Update 2). The issue triggered a premature expiration of the product license, causing a range of possible problems including the inability to power-on virtual machines on affected hosts.

At that time, I wrote that we would do everything in our power to ensure this type of incident is never repeated. Since then, we have initiated a major examination and evaluation of our product release and quality assurance processes. This effort has yielded a number of areas for improvement, and we have already begun making needed changes.

We have removed any instances of the type of “time-out” code from all major, minor and maintenance code releases for VMware enterprise products and will not incorporate this type of code in our licensed products going forward.

We are instituting a range of enhancements to our quality assurance process to place even greater emphasis on standardized, automated quality testing.

We are driving greater transparency, accountability, and oversight on the entire product release lifecycle with new formal documentation and auditing procedures.

While these are necessary and important steps, they are by no means the sum total of our efforts in this area. VMware’s products and internal processes have been designed to support mission critical environments, and we take the responsibility that comes with our role as a core element in IT infrastructures very seriously. To that end, we are taking further actions to improve the overall VMware customer experience going forward.

First, we will continue to ensure that VMware products are designed to support the reliability, availability and serviceability needs of enterprise production environments. We are investing significant resources towards improving how our products are installed and upgraded (such as with VMware Update Manager); developing more technology enablers that work to eliminate downtime (e.g. Storage VMotion) and redesigning how licensing and activation work. To get a sense of where we are pushing the boundaries here, I invite you to register to be part of our beta programs for VMware Infrastructure and other products.

Second, we will improve and better align our efforts around supporting and communicating to customers in response to product issues. We have established a company-wide effort intended to streamline and standardize how we reach out to any of our customers affected by a product issue.

Third, we will continue to provide our customers with the guidance and proven best practices to deploy, scale, and manage VMware across their datacenters. By enabling our customers to better “operationalize” their VMware environments, we will be helping them to anticipate, plan for, and easily respond to any issues that come their way. This kind of assistance is already available through our Professional Services and VMware Authorized Consultant offerings. We are making this kind of information more accessible to all VMware customers with our recently launched VI OPS portal, along with a new “VMware on VMware” program designed to provide insight into how we use our products in our own production IT environment.

We at VMware have always set high standards for ourselves in terms of product quality and customer experience. Going forward, we’ll continue to raise the bar here.

Thank you for your continued support.

Paul Maritz
President and CEO
VMware

FROM PCMAG.COM:

Google announced Monday that it has been hard at work on an open-source browser known as Chrome, a beta version of which will be released in 100 countries on Tuesday.

New features will included “isolated” tabs designed to prevent browser crashes and a more powerful JavaScript engine.

“Why are we launching Google Chrome? Because we believe we can add value for users and, at the same time, help drive innovation on the web,” Sundar Pichai, vice president of product management, and Linus Upson, Google engineering director, wrote in a blog post.

Google was apparently looking to keep news of Chrome under wraps until after the holiday weekend. A 38-page, online comic book that provided details about Chrome hit the blogosphere Monday morning, but Pichai and Upson said in their blog post that Google had “hit ’send’ a bit early” on the web comic.

The comic depicts various Google engineers describing Chrome’s features, including the isolated tab idea.

“By keeping each tab in an isolated ’sandbox’, we were able to prevent one tab from crashing another and provide improved protection from rogue sites,” Pichai and Upson wrote.

Having a number of tabs open in a single browser eats up memory. If a browser is running slow, a user’s natural inclination is to close a few tabs? In some cases, however, little bits of the closed tabs remain, which eats up space and requires the operating system to grow the browser’s address space, according to Google. With Chrome, there will be a different tab for each process, including plug-ins.

“When a tab is closed in Google Chrome, you’re ending the whole process,” according to the comic. “You can look under the hood with Google Chrome’s task mananger to see what sites are using the most memory, downloading the most bytes and abusing your CPU” so you can place “blame where blame belongs.”

Google also promised “improved speed and responsiveness across the board.”

“We also built a more powerful JavaScript engine, V8, to power the next generation of web applications that aren’t even possible in today’s browsers,” Pichai and Upson wrote.

Like OpenSocial and Android, Chrome will be an open source initiative.

“We owe a great debt to many open source projects, and we’re committed to continuing on their path,” they wrote. “We’ve used components from Apple’s WebKit and Mozilla’s Firefox, among others — and in that spirit, we are making all of our code open source as well. We hope to collaborate with the entire community to help drive the web forward.”

The team selected Webkit because it uses memory efficiently, was easily adapated to embedded devices, and it was easy for new browser developers to learn to make the code base work, according to the web comic. “Webkit keeps it simple.”

Google recently extended its financial deal with Mozilla until 2011, according to a blog post from Mitchell Baker, chair of the Mozilla Foundation.

Tuesday’s beta release will be available for Windows users. “We’re hard at work building versions for Mac and Linux too, and will continue to make it even faster and more robust,” Pichai and Upson wrote.

“This is just the beginning — Google Chrome is far from done,” they wrote. “Google Chrome is another option, and we hope it contributes to making the web even better.”

Last week, Microsoft released Internet Explorer 8 beta 2, which includes improved security and new browsing aids.

Earlier this summer, Mozilla released Firefox 3, which garnered 8 million downloads in 24 hours.

Dear VMware Customers,

We have released the express patches for the product expiration issue. Please go to http://www.vmware.com/go/esxexpresspatches for download and KB articles. Since our last customer email we have completed our verification tests that the express patches we’ve released are fully compatible with the VMware Update Manager. Please see the KB articles for deployment information regarding Update Manager.

The KB articles are kept up-to-date. Please refer to the KB articles for information and updates.

In our last update, we referred to an initiative by our support and engineering teams to find an option to apply the patch without the necessity of entering maintenance mode and VMotion of VM’s to other servers, or VM power-off and re-power-on. Our earlier tests have not found a consistently successful way to address this. We continue to investigate this possibility, as we know that it would reduce the maintenance burden on our customers who may not have a patched server available for VMotion.

We are on target to release updated versions of the ESX/ESXi 3.5 Update 2 patch at 6 PM PST today. This is for customers who have not already upgraded to the previously released version of ESX/ESXi 3.5 Update 2

- The problem will be seen if ESX350-200806201-UG is applied to a system.

- No other VMware products are affected.

Resolution:

VMware Engineering has produced express patches for impacted customers to resolve the issue.

FAQ:

1. What do the express patches do?

There are two express patches: one for ESX 3.5 Update 2 and one for ESXi 3.5 Update 2. They are specifically targeted for customers who have installed or fully upgraded to ESX/ESXi 3.5 Update 2 or who have applied the ESX350-200806201-UG patch to ESX/ESXi 3.5 or ESX/ESX 3.5 Update 1 hosts. For customers who haven’t done either, these express patches should not be applied.

To be noted is that these patches have been validated to work with esxupdate. However, testing with the VMware Update Manager is still under way. In subsequent communications, we will provide confirmation whether the patches work with VMware Update Manger or if a re-spin is required.

We are currently testing an option to apply the patch without requiring VMotion or VM power-off and re-power-on at the point of patch application. To immediately refresh vmx on the VM, one can VMotion off running VMs, apply the patches and VMotion the VMs back. If VMotion capability is not available, VMs can be powered off before the patches are applied and powered back on afterwards.

2. When will VMware re-issue the upgrade media and patch bundles?

VMware plans to re-issue upgrade media by 6pm, August 13 PST and all update patch bundles later in the week. We will provide an ETA for the update patch bundles subsequently.

NOTE:

An upgrade media refers to ESX 3.5 Update 2 ISO, ESXi 3.5 Update 2 ISO, ESX 3.5 Update 2 upgrade tar and zip files. They are for customers who haven’t installed or upgraded to ESX/ESXi 3.5 Update 2 but wish to.

The “patch bundles” here refer to those released at GA. They are for customers who do not wish to do a full upgrade to ESX/ESXi 3.5 Update 2, but apply patches that are deemed necessary to hosts running ESX/ESXi 3.5 or ESX/ESXi 3.5 Update 1. They are not the same as the express patch which is described above.

3. Why does VMware plan to re-issue the upgrade media before the patch bundles?

Since we can complete building and testing of the upgrade media before the patch bundles, we want to make that available to customers right away instead of re-issuing all the binaries later in the week.

Please find the latest update about the product expiration issue. From this point on, we’ll provide an update every two hours. Thanks.

Problem:

An issue has been discovered by many VMware customers and partners with ESX/ESXi 3.5 Update 2 where Virtual Machines fail to power on or VMotion successfully. This problem began to occur on August 12, 2008 for customers that had upgraded to ESX 3.5 Update 2. The problem is caused by a build timeout that was mistakenly left enabled for the release build.

Affected Products:

VMware ESX 3.5 Update 2 & ESXi 3.5 Update 2

Reports of problems with ESX 3.5 U1 with the following 3.5 Update 2 patch applied.
1. ESX350-200806201-UG

No other VMware products are affected.

What has been done?

Product and Web teams pulled the ESX 3.5 Update 2 bits from the download pages last night so no more customers will be able to download the broken build.

VMware Engineering teams have isolated the cause of the problem and are working around the clock to deliver updated builds and patches for impacted customers.

A Knowledgebase article has been published (http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1006716), but traffic to the knowledgebase is causing time outs. A new static page has been published at http://www.vmware.com/support/esx35u2_supportalert.html that customers and partners will be able to view.

The phone system has been updated to advise customers of the problem

Vmware partners have been notified of the issue.

Workarounds:

Do not install ESX 3.5 U2 if it has been downloaded from VMware’s website or elsewhere prior to August 12, 2008.

Set the host time to a date prior to August 12, 2008. This workaround has a number of very serious side affects that could impact product environments. Any Virtual Machines that sync time with the ESX host and serve time sensitive applications would be broken. These include, but are not limited to database servers, mail servers, & domain administration systems.

Next Steps:
VMware to notify customers who have downloaded this version and provide an update every two hours.

Resolution:

VMware Engineering has isolated the root cause and is working to produce an express patch for impacted customers today. The target timeframe is 6pm, August 12, 2008 PST.

FAQ:

What would this express patch do?

More information will be provided in subsequent communication updates.

Will VMware still reissue the upgrade media and patch bundles in the timeframe that has been communicated?

Yes. We still plan to reissue upgrade media by 6pm, August 13 PST (instead of noon, August 13 PST) and all update patch bundles later in the week. We will provide an ETA for the update patch bundles subsequently. NOTE: the “patch bundles” referred to here are for the patches listed above under “Affected Products” and the other bundles released at GA. They are not the same as the express patch which is targeted for 6pm, August 12, 2008 PST as stated above.

Why does VMware plan to reissue the upgrade media before the patch bundles? That is a wrong priority call!

This is not a matter of priority. Since we can get done building and testing the upgrade media before the patch bundles, we want to make that available to customers first instead of reissuing all the binaries later in the week.

Can VMware issue a patch that opens the licensing backdoor in the next hour as a critical measure?

There is no licensing backdoor in our code.

Does this issue affect VC 2.5 Update 2?

No.

What is VMware doing to make sure that the problem won’t happen again?

We are making improvements on all fronts. The product team had endeavored to deliver a release with support customers deem important. But we fell short and we are deeply sorry about all the disruption and inconveniences we have caused. We have identified where the holes are and they will be addressed to restore customers’ confidence.

In early July 2008, I purchased a Dell T105 small business server to host some simple single-page webs. It was my intention to use it as a web front end server for 12-18 months, then demote it to a simple fileshare.

Here is my review of the Dell T105 Server:

Configuration:

Dual-core AMD Opteron @ 1.8MHz

4 GIG 800MHz RAM

2x 250G SATA HDDs, no RAID

1x 100mb NIC

No OS

My Enhancements:

Windows Server 2003 Enterprise

AVG Network Edition

PROS:

Quiet Machine. This is one you can easily keep in the open office, not in a rack or closet. (it’s a desktop by the way) The HDDs are cheap and make TONS of noise when utilized.

The machine is quite quick to boot, even with SQL server, IIS, AVG, and Active Directory running. Boot takes about 2 minutes, which for a server is pretty good.

The two 250G hard drives are plenty of space for my web front ends, a SQL server, and IIS logs of my heavy traffic websites. The drawback is that I didn’t get RAID as I knew I was supposed to… Next time.

Inexpensive. I paid just under $700 for my configuration, and it comes with a 3 year warranty.

CONS:

I purchased my machine without RAID, and with a DVD-ROM for installation media, I only have 3 SATA ports available for HDDs, and no onboard RAID to use. Dell offered a RAID controller, multiple in fact, and I should have purchased one.

No Gigabit NIC. Again, Dell has this upgrade option, I simply didn’t utilize it.

Operating system upgrades weren’t competitively priced. I could purchase the license for Server 2003 for about $300 cheaper than Dell was offering.

Verdict:

The Dell T105 Server (Dell T-105) is an extremely good choice for small 20-30 person offices or those who wish to host multiple websites with 4000-10000 hits per day. If you want a system that will last you 5+ years, this one is not it. The HDDs are consumer class and the ventilation isn’t going to keep the parts happy for 5 years. If you keep this system in a well ventilated area and patch it regularly, it will give you excellent performance at an affordable price.

Find the Dell T105 on the CHEAP!
